Episode A2: DIGGING

Beginning Quote: Tennyson, Kraken.
Stranger is back in his room.
Gets up, goes downstairs.
Talks to Guy Behind The Desk.
"Remembered why you're here yet?"
"Nope. I found out there's been a murder though."
"Really?"
"Really."
"Who?"
"A woman called Nova Holland."
"Hey! She stayed here! In Room… Room…"
FLASHBACK TO DREAM- "Room 2.7.3."
"Room 273?"
"Yeah! You a friend of hers?"
"Not that I recall…" "I thought I'd take a look around today, explore the area."
Guy Behind The Desk offers tourist advice (VO as we see external shots).
View: The Old Town
View: The Dig
View: The Forest
view: The Wilderness
"Apart from people who come here special like you, we don't get casual visitors. No road, see."
"No road? No road at all?"
"Just the Old Straight Track. Runs all the way from here down past The Old Town to the valley floor then clean away to Crayfish Creek. At least it meets up with the road or freeway or whatever down there."
"Hm. I'll just wander around the mountain today I guess."
"You aren't really dressed for it, you know."
Stranger goes back to room.
Dresses warmer. He seems initially puzzled at where the clothes came from, then is unconcerned.
Goes downstairs.
"What wing is Room 273 in?"
"East. But the room's locked of course. No one's staying in it at the moment."
"Are there many guests?"
"Some. No one should disturb you, though… You have a whole area to yourself up there at the moment."
"Right. Thanks…"
Stranger heads out.
Guy Behind The Desk picks up phone.
He calls Mr. Arkadin.
"He's heading out. Down the mountain I guess. No. Could be either. The town's way aways though. Most likely The Dig."
Agatha is eavesdropping on her apparent boss, the Guy Behind The Desk.
Jumpcut to forest.
Jumpcut to field.
Jumpcut to The Dig.
The Dig is an ominous place. Massive mine workings and a factory. It's grim. And cavernous. Imposing and sinister. An industrial ghost town.
Stranger enters The Dig.
Stranger explores, finds signs someone's been there. Recent footprints…
HE IS BEING WATCHED BY SOMEONE… OR SOMETHING…
Stranger continues exploring, approaching the Mine Head, not realising he is being stalked…
THE WATCHER GETS CLOSER AND CLOSER TO HIM…
The Stranger hears a sudden noise-
The Lurker is close enough to touch now-
Suddenly from nowhere another dark figure menaces the Stranger from behind.
The Stranger panicks and runs off into the gathering darkness.
The Fake Spook laughs, showing himself to be masculine by his voice, unaware he is watched by The Lurker.
CUT TO BLACK
End Quote: Woody Allen, Do Not Want To Be There.
